SUNSHINE COAST GOLFER TAKES OUT ONE OF WORLD’S MOST PRESTIGIOUS AMATEUR TOURNAMENTS

The Sunshine Coast’s Chris Crabtree, a member of the Pelican Waters Golf Club, has taken out the Riversdale Cup, one of the world’s most important and prestigious amateur golf tournaments.

In a “down-to-the-wire” final round, Crabtree was locked with Blake Collyer, from Melbourne’s Metropolitan Golf Club, at 16-under at the par-four 18th. Metropolitan’s Aiden Dedone, the leader late in the round, was one shot off the pace.

All played for position on the reachable 18th with Crabtree and Collyer drawing their drives into a dip adjacent to the green. Dedone, meanwhile, went straight and his second shot landed a couple of metres from the pin.

Crabtree proved up to the challenge and pitched his second close enough to the pin to be satisfied as Collyer left himself with a long putt that was always going to be difficult.

Crabtree duly holed his birdie putt, as did Dedone, with Collyer having to settle for par.

Crabtree finished with a 17-under total of 271 in one of the most dramatic of the 111 Riversdale Cups played at south-east Melbourne layout.

The women’s tournament, run together with the men’s, was won by Japanese youngster, Yuna Nishimura, with a 10-under 282.

Last year’s women’s winner, Rebecca Kay, from Queensland, was runner-up on 7-under.
