THE MOST SIGNIFICANT YEAR YET FOR RIVERSDALE’S REMEMBRANCE DAY COMMEMORATION

Since the end of the second world war Riversdale has commemorated Remembrance Day as one of the most significant days in the club’s calendar.

And this year the day has particular importance – the 100th anniversary of the end of the Great War on 11.11.1918

The day itself has become a true and lasting reminder of the sacrifices made on the world’s fields of conflict by Australia’s servicemen and women.

Over the years  the format has changed little and nor should it. It is about those who have served and those who failed to return. It is a day to reflect.

Perhaps the most momentous, if questionable, change, has been the end of two-up at the conclusion of proceedings. Popular as it was, two-up is not really what the day is about.

Traditionally, Riversdale celebrates Remembrance Day with a golf tournament – competing for the Services Shield and the Bill Winning Memorial Trophy for the leading individual player – followed by a highly-acclaimed commemorative dinner with a keynote speaker.

This year, the club has asked military historian and First World War specialist, Professor Ross McMullin (pictured above), from Melbourne University, to provide his take on war in general and Australia’s role in particular.  (see: http://www.rossmcmullin.com.au

It promises to be an entertaining and informative evening and all members, men and women, are urged to start thinking about attending and remaining or becoming part of a fine tradition, one that grows in popularity from year to year.

Ross McMullin will join a line of prominent speakers who have included Weary Dunlop, former Victorian Premier, Ted Baillieu, football legend, Ron Barassi, former RSL chief, Bruce Ruxton, and authors Paul Ham and Chris Masters.
