This year our speaker for the Remembrance Day dinner will be Lt Colonel Ross Smith.
Lt Colonel Ross Smith was the Australian Army’s Public Relations Officer in Vietnam in 1966 and was thus privy to details of the historic Battle of Long Tan, the most significant enemy encounter of the Vietnam conflict.
It was a firefight that saw 18 Australians killed with enemy – Viet Cong and North Vietnamese – casualties of 245-plus.
Ross, who has also represented Mount Waverley in the Victorian Parliament and is a former journalist, has a fascinating story to tell that will be well worth hearing.
