Course Plan Implementation ~ Holes 1 & 2 Update and Course Report

By Course Superintendent, Travis Scott

Course Plan works commence on Monday 29th August with tree contractors removing selected trees on the 1st and 2nd holes. A Quercus palustris (Pin Oak) and Eucalyptus Corymbia Maculata were removed from the RHS of the 1st green. On the RHS of the 2nd men’s tee a Cupressus macrocarpa, Lebanese cedar and Corymbia Maculata were removed to allow for the construction of the new 2nd tee. The Lebanese Cedar and Maculata were not included for removal in the architect’s initial drawings, however following a site visit it was determined that the trees were required for removal (photos below).  Some re-plantings will be a priority once the works are completed. Riversdale staff have continued the tree work with the removal of two Eucalyptus maculatas on the LHS of the fairway.  This will allow for the fairway to be widened and flattened to assist ball retention on the cut surface. Further tree works will be completed on the RHS of the second tee which will involve removal of the overgrown vegetation encroaching on the tee which will then be re-vegetated as part of the works program.

Herbicide applications have been completed to remove of unwanted grasses. The first application of Glyphosate was applied on the 5 September on selected areas to remove Kikuyu and Parramatta grass.  These areas will be reshaped and seeded. Selective herbicide was also applied to all couch surfaces on the first and second holes to assist Poa annua control.

Staff have commenced the removal of irrigation heads in the areas of re-construction to ensure they can be re-installed once construction is complete.  Although time consuming, the re-use of irrigation infrastructure will result in significant savings.  Next week we will also commence lifting turf in selected areas and store the sods for re-use. We have also obtained over 500m2 of greens turf from Commonwealth GC – currently undertaking significant course works, to be used as part of our re-construction works.

Excavation works will commence on Monday 19 September with initial works including removal of all unwanted turf followed by construction of the first hole tees.

We will continue to provide updates of the works program throughout the project.

COURSE REPORT

Weather conditions have not been ideal for golf over the last month following 19 days of rainfall through August and a total of 93.6mm.  Year-to-date rainfall is 476.8mm. Surprisingly, this is consistent with rainfall in 2021,  however the golf course was closed due to the lockdowns.
Course works completed include the concreting of paths on the 12th & 15th tees; pre-emergent Herbicide applied to fairways to control Poa annua; five Aleppo pines planted on the LHS of hole 7 alongside the maintenance facility (see picture) – these trees were grown from seed (by RGC Member Garth Hodge) from the Aleppo pine removed from the Short Game Area; herbicide applied to the rough area on the RHS of Hole 13 which is currently being shaped in preparation for seeding – to be completed by Wednesday 14th September.  This will be followed by the planting of six Eucalyptus Maculata’s (see picture below) in the area.

Bathroom renovations ~ update

Renovations of the locker room bathroom areas and the men’s upstairs bathroom are progressing well, and according to plan!

Plumbing and electrical rough-in is complete.  Waterproofing has commenced, and is scheduled for completion by Monday, and then all areas left to cure for a few days – please be careful not to enter these areas. Painting is scheduled to commence later next week before cabinetry commences on 21 September, followed by tiling commencement on 26 September. Benchtop installation is scheduled for 5 October followed by plumbing and electrical fit off.  Cubicle partitions have been ordered, and are scheduled as the final phase of the works for installation on approximately 10 October.

Pictured above: women’s locker room bathroom area with two additional cubicles (replacing two showers.

A reminder that the women’s upstairs bathroom area and the two bathrooms near the main clubhouse entry  remain open, and that lockers may be accessed using the entry doors on the western side of the clubhouse only (ie: entry doors are down the stairs near the office/reception).  There is no access to lockers from the locker room foyer.

Alex Russell Gathering at Royal Melbourne Golf Club

A group of Riversdale members attended a three day Alex (pronounced “Alec”) Russell Society Gathering at the Royal Melbourne Golf Club from 28-30 August. The gathering included representatives from Paraparaumu Beach Golf Club (New Zealand), Lake Karrinyup Country Club (WA), Yarra Yarra Golf Club, the Royal Melbourne Golf Club and Riversdale Golf Club. All of these Clubs share Alex Russell as their original course designer.

The speaker program included both historical narratives and current day approaches to course works being faithful to the original Alex Russell design values. Ian Rowell gave a great talk on the establishment of Riversdale, its changes in location and ultimate Alex Russell design following the extension of the Glen Waverley train line.

Yarra Yarra and Paraparaumu both gave presentations that reflected on their recent course works along with Richard Forsyth, Course Superintendent at the Royal Melbourne Golf Club. Each had different approaches to the extent of the changes and timeframe of the works. However, what was evident was that they shared many similar issues to Riversdale; improved golfer performance, constrained space, suburban pressures, well intentioned planting of vegetation that had affected the health and playability of the course, along with various course architects and committee influences on the course design over time.

It was a great sharing of knowledge and experience and further bonding between the Clubs whose common ground is their Alex Russell designed course. It is anticipated that Riversdale will host the next gathering in 2024.

For more information regarding Alex Russell, the book “Discovering Alex Russell” is available from the office ($50 each – email admin@riversdalegolf.com.au).  See also, page 6 of Riversdale’s new course plan (as pictured below right).
